Engineer

Engineer Responsibilities:

Works on improvement projects to roads, drainage systems, bridges, parking lots
Advises Town agencies on projects
Coordinates with outside consultants working on large improvement projects
Coordinates with State personnel on projects involving their facilities or related to grant funds
Works with surveyors on maps or easement plans required for Town projects
Advises the Planning and Zoning Commission on all proposed subdivisions and site plans including design reviews during the application process
Advises the Conservation Commission on drainage impacts on wetlands for large development proposals during the application process
Oversees field inspection during construction and performance bond process
Works on grant administration activities on engineering projects
Develops and upgrades Town maps
Presents new roads for acceptance to the Board of Selectmen and upgrades Town and non-Town road lists
Supervises pavement management program and implements improvement projects under the program
Responds to road and drainage complaints

Highway

Highway Responsibilities:

Maintenance of 80 miles of roads and paved areas including plowing, sanding, roadside mowing, sweeping, tree trimming
Pot hole and curb repair
Drainage improvements
Care of 150+ acres of Town lawns, park fields, playing fields including mowing, weed control, planting, irrigation
General and seasonal upkeep at Town parks, recreation facilities
Building maintenance, repair and moving services at Town buildings
Seasonal bulky waste pick-up
Leaf drop off at Suffield Landfill
Assistance to volunteer organizations for Town-wide functions

The Tree Warden helps enhance the beauty of the Suffield community through the planting and care of trees on public land. The Warden works closely with community organizations on landscaping projects throughout town.

Volunteers have assisted the Warden in the inventory of trees along Main Street and on the Town Green. Several Liberty Elm trees have been planted in town over the last two years.

The Warden seeks a state grant each year to help defray the cost of maintaining the tree inventory. Trees have several benefits to a community besides their attractiveness. Trees help provide clean air, cooling, and beneficial sound filtering. The most important function of the Tree Warden is public safety.

The Tree Warden is committed to enhancing the beauty of Suffield, protecting our valuable trees and keeping the town as safe as possible.

The Tree Warden reports that Suffield is home to the largest living Elm tree in Connecticut!

Landfill & Trash

Inmate Program

Clint White under the direction of the Highway Foreman, are responsible for pick up and transportation of four inmates from the Willard Cybulski Correctional Institution, Somers, CT. The inmates are low risk individuals, at the end of their sentences, and provide thousands of man hours to the Town each year at no cost. Daily activities are scheduled for the inmates in coordination with the Highway Foreman to complete an effective working team. The inmates complete tasks such as demolition and cleaning during renovation projects, painting building interiors, snow removal, raking of leaves and general property maintenance.

Winter sand mixed with salt is available to residents at the Highway Garage - bring a shovel and bucket!
