48-hour detour will be in place during construction
The replacement of railroad crossing on Suffield Street in Suffield will take place October 19-20, 2026. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the rail crossing will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for approximately 48 hours.
The existing railroad crossing on Suffield Street is being replaced with all-new material to enhance safety and provide a smooth passage for motorists and improve rail infrastructure.
A detour will be posted to bypass through traffic around the construction site. Please exercise caution while following posted detour routes, and allocate additional time to transit the area. All businesses and/or residences along Suffield Street will remain accessible.
The project is funded and being undertaken by the Connecticut Southern Railroad (CSO), and conducted by the railroad and their contractor. CTDOT Office of Rail is assisting with public coordination.
The work is being performed in full coordination between the CTDOT Office of Rail, Town of Suffield, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Connecticut Southern Railroad. Efforts are being made to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.
Extreme weather may alter the project schedules.
Phelps Road- Beginning on Wednesday 9/30/2026 road construction work will begin. The road will be rebuilt from the intersection of Mountain Road to the island at Copper Hill Road. This project will consist of milling the existing asphalt and ten inches of the existing base material, installation of geogrid, processed gravel base, binder and top course asphalt installation, new curb installation, backfilling of curbs and seeding.
The road will be down to one lane in areas during construction. Please use caution when driving and be aware of construction machinery, workers and police officers. The posted speed limit during construction will be 20mph.
If you wish to protect your private features from damage during construction, please remove them from the Town’s right of way area that will be impacted by construction (typically within 10 ft. from behind the curb.) You are encouraged to disconnect and remove sprinkler heads and move the irrigation pipe back out of the way. Any damage to private features in the right of way will not be repaired, replaced, or altered by the Town or the contractor. Mailboxes are excluded and do not need to be moved.

Temporary Closure: Due to structural failures of the Suffield Street culvert, the road is closed to all through traffic at the intersection of Mather Street (Southbound) and at the town line coming from Windsor Locks (Northbound). Through traffic is not permitted and cannot cross. Please follow detour signs. The town understands the inconvenience this causes and is working diligently to have the culvert rebuilt and the road opened as soon as possible.
In 2020, Tecton Architects was commissioned to complete a Facilities Master Plan evaluating the condition and long-term needs of major Town facilities. The study identified Suffield Middle School and Fire Station 1 as priority buildings requiring significant infrastructure improvements and long-range planning.
Following additional review by Town committees and the Permanent Building Commission, the Town engaged Colliers as Owner’s Project Manager to help guide the evaluation and planning process for both facilities. Throughout this process, the Town has worked closely with the Board of Education, school staff, Fire Commission, and Fire Department to better understand operational and community needs.

Please join us in welcoming Christopher Nevins to the Town of Suffield! Christopher joined the Town in July 2026 as a Library Clerk. Prior to joining the Kent Memorial Library, Christopher served as a Member Services Supervisor at the Delray Beach, Florida Library. He also owned and operated a garden design and maintenance business, combining his creativity with his lifelong passion for gardening and landscaping.
Christopher's love of gardening began when he was a young boy and continues to be one of his favorite pastimes. His favorite flower is the peony, and he enjoys collecting gardening books, as well as reading about history, architecture, and art history. He is currently restoring and renovating a 1790 home, a project that allows him to blend his appreciation for history with hands-on craftsmanship.
